Camp Reasoner Memories
Camp Reasoner was the home of the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion during 1965
and 1966. It received its name in honor of 1st Lt. Frank Reasoner, who was
killed in action on 12 July 1965, while serving as the Company Commander of
Alpha Company. Frank was awarded the Medal Of Honor for
his actions of 12 July near the village of An My in the Danang TAOR. The camp
was located on the side of Hill 327. The 3rd Marine Division Headquarters was
located directly above the camp further up the mountainside.
During the early Spring of 1966 the Battalion was commanded by Lt. Col.
Roy Van Cleve. As a tribute to Frank's memory Van Cleve prepared a
Camp Reasoner Photo Album and sent it to Frank's wife Sally. When the album was
made a duplicate copy was also produced and Lt. Col. Van Cleve preserved it.
During 1996 Roy made several people aware that he still had the Camp Reasoner
book. Roy passed away in January 1997.
Recently Mrs. Winifred Van Cleve presented the
album to a member of the association with instructions for its perpetual care.
These photo's are presented
for all to see. They depict all areas of Camp Reasoner "Circa 1966"
and provide an historic look back into the legacy of the 3rd Reconnaissance
Battalion.
